As an Australian coming to Malaysia, you have the luxury of a high number of locals speaking English. However, when venturing to smaller towns or buying products at a local market it can be really useful to have a bit of Malay in your pocket. Also, from my own experience, since I’ve started speaking the language I see Malaysia very differently and have a much deeper connection to the people and culture. Speaking Malay has also allowed me to show respect to the people of this country and say thank you for letting me live in this beautiful place!
