My experience studying Bahasa Melayu at SLC – Pusat Bahasa Istimewan

A question that seems to arise often is where to take Bahasa Melayu language classes in KL, I can recommend SLC.

SLC – Pusat Bahasa Istimewa is a private institution which specialises in language learning. They offer classes from basic to advanced level in Malay, Mandarin, German, French and English. They offer group classes which follow a set timetable, but their private classes are more flexible and can be tailored to your needs For example, I study full time, which equates to 15 hours per week spread over 4 days. Other students have chosen to do 15 hours over 5 days. I am sure you would be able to arrange a schedule with more, less or different hours as required. Additionally, SLC are able to assist you with the student visa application process and your arrival into Malaysia.

The group classes have a set syllabus, while the beauty of enrolling in private classes means that you can tailor the learning to your specific needs. For myself, this meant a balance between language and culture. For example, in one class we learned about each state and what it is famous for, where to visit in that state and the regional food specialty. I also advised my teachers that I had a preference for learning spoken language rather than having too much emphasis on formal language or grammar conventions which are dropped in conversation. They were happy to oblige, and we even had a class specifically on emphasis words. Amboi!

There are a variety of teachers at SLC, all with friendly, welcoming personalities and varied backgrounds and teaching experience. My lessons are split between two lovely teachers, both of whom come from different cultural backgrounds and have different teaching methods. I find this to be very useful to my learning, as well as my understanding of Malaysian culture. The teachers and administration staff are very helpful, and extremely responsive to queries both in and outside of the language centre. They are flexible to schedule changes and other requests, provided enough notice is given.

Finally, SLC is easily accessible by public transport. The language centre is a short walk (roughly 10 mins) from the SS15 LRT station (on the Kelana Jaya [red] LRT line). There are plenty of accommodation options nearby in the Subang Jaya area, or you could opt to live further along the red line in order to be closer to the city centre. For example, the areas around Kerinchi and Universiti stations are popular with expats and international students. Travel from either station to SS15 takes about 30 mins, and about 20 minutes to KLCC.
