Exploring Penang’s Culinary Delights at the Wonderfood Museum!

Georgetown, on Penang Island, is a must-visit spot in Malaysia. The stunning colonial streets of Georgetown are a centre for culture, street art, and the country’s best street food. Known as the food paradise of Malaysia, Penang offers a diverse culinary scene that includes a wide variety of dishes from different cultures. If you’re a food enthusiast like me, then you’re in for an adventure!

For a slightly different sight-seeing experience, why not check out the Wonderfood Museum. Picture this: larger-than-life models of Malaysia’s national obsession – food! And not just any food, but the most mouthwatering and iconic dishes you can think of, beautifully crafted and, most importantly, supersized! If you’ve ever seen those ultra-realistic plastic replicas of dishes outside Japanese restaurants, then you have a little idea of what to expect at Wonderfood Museum. But here’s the twist – the models are of Malaysian food, and they are HUGE! It’s like stepping into a magical world where food comes to life in all its varied and delicious forms. I had so much fun visiting Wonderfood with some friends as there are loads of props and interactive components to the exhibit – note my ridiculous photos!

But wait, there’s more! Wonderfood Museum goes beyond just being an Instagram-worthy spot. It’s also an educational journey into the history of food in Malaysia. You’ll find fascinating displays that delve into Malaysia’s food heritage and rare, disappearing dishes like glutinous rice cooked in pitcher plants, an Orang Asli specialty. There was so much information about the history of the foods as well as some really thought-provoking displays relating to issues such as food security and health.

One of the best parts of visiting this museum is the handy map and recommendations they provide. You’ll get insider tips on where to find the best street food in Penang. So, if you want to explore the local food scene including Assam Laksa, Char Kuey Teow, and more, this museum is a must-visit!
