Exploring Cameron Highlands

Nestled in the heart of Malaysia, Cameron Highlands is a hill station, with lush tea plantations, cool climate, strawberry fields, and awe-inspiring scenery. Just a short drive away from Kuala Lumpur, this charming destination offers the perfect escape from the bustling city life and sweltering heat. Having recently explored it myself, I can vouch that the best way to experience Cameron Highlands is by having your own vehicle, which allows you to uncover its hidden gems and breathtaking landscapes at your own pace. Although bus services are available, navigating between all the sights without private transport might prove to be quite challenging. Nevertheless, there’s an interesting Grab App option that lets you hire a driver for a 4-hour tour, but I haven’t tried it yet.

There are so many things to do and see in Cameron Highlands. Granted, I only had 24 hours to explore the region, so I did not see it all. The following are just a taste of what there is to see and experience – and I have pointed out what I personally enjoyed too.

Scenic Tea Fields

Cameron Highlands is renowned for its tea plantations. Numerous tea estates are worth exploring, with popular options being Cameron Valley Tea Plantation 1 & 2. However, if you seek a less touristy adventure, I recommend the BOH Tea Estate in Habu, Pahang. As you wind through the picturesque tea fields, you might feel a little lost, but the view at the top is worth it. Additionally, you can join factory tours (held every hour) to gain insights into the tea production process.

Hiking Adventures

Cameron Highlands offers 14 different hiking routes that meander through its hills and tea plantations. These trails range in difficulty and length, with some requiring guides and permits. To obtain a permit, make sure to contact Pejabat Daerah dan Tanah Cameron Highlands.

Mossy forest is one of the most picturesque spots in the region. This misty and ancient forest is teeming with diverse flora and fauna, offering a truly unique experience. However, a guide and permit are necessary for this challenging hike. If, like me, you are short on time, you can still enjoy a small part of the Mossy Forest by following the road signs to Mossy Forest, where you can then stroll along the boardwalk. The entrance fees at the time of writing were RM30 for foreigners and RM10 for Malaysians.

High Tea Experience

A visit to Cameron Highlands wouldn’t be complete without indulging in a traditional High Tea experience. You will find many cafes and tea plantations offering their own take on high tea, with endless combinations of tea, strawberry-laced desserts and scones. My favourite is the Jim Thompson Tea Room at Cameron Highlands Resort, where you can relish an array of finger sandwiches, scones, and petit-fours from 3-6 pm. For a total of 75RM (plus tax and service charge), two people can enjoy this High Tea experience in a stunning setting. The impeccable service was made even better by the hilarious waiter, who was giving off serious “Zero Moustafa” (Grand Budapest Hotel) vibes. Note that the High Tea operates on a first-come-first-served basis with no reservations possible.

Strawberry Farms

Another “must-do” is to visit one of the many strawberry farms in the region, where you can pick fresh strawberries and taste various strawberry-infused products, such as jams and desserts. While several options are available, I highly recommend Raju’s Hill Strawberry Farms.

For approximately RM40 per 500g, you can hand pick your strawberries. The café here also has many unique strawberry inspired foods and drinks, such as the strawberry white coffee, strawberry hot chocolate, or strawberry milkshake.

Other Natural Beauty in Cameron Highlands

Other than hiking, tea and strawberries, Cameron Highlands has plenty more nature to explore. The Butterfly Garden, located at Kea Farm, is a live insect gallery and zoological garden, showcasing a captivating collection of butterflies and live insects displayed in aquariums. Additionally, you can explore the captivating Cameron Lavender Garden, a beautiful space filled with lavender and other colourful flowers.

For another unique stop on your trip – visit the MARDI Agrotechnology Park in Tanah Rata. This research station managed by the Malaysia Agriculture Research and Development Institute showcases various flower gardens, crop houses, nurseries, and farmlands. Here, you’ll discover an impressive assortment of plants, including 40 varieties of roses, ten types of strawberries, over 100 citrus fruits, anthuriums, apples, grapes, and persimmons.

Immersing in Local Culture: Sam Poh Temple and Time Tunnel Gallery

For a glimpse into the local culture and heritage, a visit to Sam Poh Temple is a must. The largest religious structure in Cameron Highlands – this Buddhist temple rests atop a small hill, offering visitors a gorgeous view while they enjoy the stunning architecture of the temple.

If you’re a history buff, the Time Tunnel Gallery in Brinchang is a fascinating museum that unveils the evolution of Cameron Highlands through an extensive collection of exhibits and artefacts. Curated by a local enthusiast, the museum features over 1,000 items, offering visitors a journey through time.

Sunset Views: Gunung Brinchang and Kampung Raja Viewpoint

As the day draws to a close, make your way to Gunung Brinchang, the highest peak in Cameron Highlands. From its observation tower, you’ll be treated to stunning sunset views that paint the picturesque landscapes with hues of gold and crimson. Alternatively, head to the Kampung Raja Viewpoint, offering another beautiful vantage point to witness the sunset.

Night Market: Souvenirs and Local Cuisine

To end your day, head to Cameron Highlands night market, also known as Pasar Malam. Here you can find a variety of local products, souvenirs, and street foods.

Where to Stay: A Variety of Accommodations

Cameron Highlands offers all variety of accommodations, ranging from hotels and guesthouses to apartments. Brinchang Town, with its mall and numerous restaurants is the most populated area. However, you might prefer to look in other areas of the highlands for quieter options. Regardless of your choice, having your own vehicle grants you easy access to all of the sights you wish to see

In summary, with its lush tea plantations, picturesque hiking trails, vibrant strawberry farms, and cultural gems, this Cameron Highlands offers something for everyone. Whether you’re an adventure seeker, nature enthusiast, or simply in search of a peaceful retreat, Cameron Highlands will leave you with unforgettable memories.
